The water hyacinth plant is a spongy tropical water weed commonly found in the rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia. Water hyacinth grows densely in clumps of 8-10 stems each measuring an average of 60-80cm in length.

The rapid water hyacinth growth in Thailand has caused waterway clogging, resulting in water pollution. Substantial government spending is invested to endeavour to eradicate this problem. Along with manufacturer incentive schemes this has created active participation of local people to clear water hyacinth from the waterways. Water hyacinth is now a cash crop for many rural Thai people.
