In Conversation | Trish Wallace

Founder, Trish Wallace is a superwoman of sorts. With her eye for beautifully considered homewares, furniture and art, she has developed a strong sense of style in her own home, which filters through to our iconic Madisons aesthetic.

We visited Trish in her stunning character home in Te Awanga, designed by renowned architect and Trish's partner, Jacob Scott. In true Scott style, the connection to nature and the land can be seen with the design - the house is built without hallways, and each room is cleverly linked by verandas and an internal courtyard. The lofty ceiling and large windows create a wonderful airiness, playing with natural light and shadow from the majestic mature trees in the garden.

Despite its history, the house has carefully evolved over time, with the newly extended wing remarkably altering the roof line a little, but keeping the style intact of course, the house now includes an office, extra guest room and bathroom.

Trish’s style is eclectic, yet effortlessly curated with a considered mix of old and new. Her eye for refined design pieces is as keen as her eye for those special one-of-a-kind little antique treasures. Her love of art is also echoed throughout, with some special works from local artists and clever friends, not to mention some stunning sculptural works from Jacob.

Another iconic feature is the beautiful bay window seats which make the most of the morning sun, the perfect spot to cosy up with a good book or just gaze out at the lush sprawling gardens - Trish’s pride and joy!

Trish's favourite part of the home:
In the winter time, Trish loves the second living area because it's such a beautifully intimate space, that's wonderfully cosy with the fireplace.
"I chose a rich, earthy green velvet for the curtains to create warmth and the texture is so luxurious - it just completes the space".

In the warmer months, the window seat in the main living space is bathed in sunshine, the perfect spot to look out to the garden.

One of Trish's favourite things in her home:
A Ralph Hotere original, an iconic painting rich in history and beautiful earthy palette. In true Hotere style, it was painted on a cupboard door and was actually created at Trish's home.

Other inspiring creatives, people or sources:
Nature is a constant source of inspiration - unapologetic and beauty in its rawest form.
Travelling is always very inspiring, being immersed in another culture and history really sparks creativity. "I have met some fabulous people on my travels and buying trips, there are truly too many to name!"
Favourite things to do around Hawke's Bay:
I love being at home and getting stuck into the garden, or taking the dogs Ted and Missy for walks.

Describe your style:
Neutral, organic, textural and calming. A good mix of old and new, and rich in layers.
"I only make little changes at a time around home, sometimes just a couple of new cushions can bring a whole new energy to the space."
